Lying VS Laying | Grammar Lesson

I thought I had the lay of the land with lie and lay, but a while ago I was stuck in a particular sentence and couldn’t figure out what was correct: lying or laying. The dictionary and grammar books were not quite clarifying the matter. So I went to google search and found an enlightening sentence: “If you see something lying on the ground, it is just resting there; if you see something laying on the ground, it must be doing something else, such as laying eggs.” Bingo! Laying requires an action. Lying does not. As soon as I lay the book on the table, it is lying on the table.
